The laboratory studies the genetic determinants of blood cell ontogeny and disease. The blood system recapitulates fundamental biologic activities, such as renewal/differentiation, regeneration/homeostasis, and development/aging. We use molecular genetic, biochemical, and genome editing methodologies to perturb and observe blood cells. We are particularly interested in the role of the regulatory genome in conferring specificity on cellular identity at spatiotemporal, population, and evolutionary scales. Ultimately we aim to apply our discoveries to develop novel treatment strategies for blood disorders.
